How To Write Terms and Conditions That Your Buyers Will Understand


Happy eBay Buyer Term and Conditions

Did you know that eBay is going to force us to place terms and conditions on our listings? That’s right this is another one of their recent changes. But this one I feel is a great benefit for us sellers and should have been implemented by sellers from the start.

Writing an amazing eBay listing isn’t just about crafting the perfect item description detailing every thing about your product. It’s also about what surrounds that description, your ‘terms & conditions’. If done right, this will increase your sales. You will be giving your buyers confidence that they’re buying from an honest, sympathetic seller. If done wrong, they can kill your sales dead on site.

Don’t bid on this auction if you don’t plan on paying …

How many times have you read that in an auction listing? Probably more than you can remember. How did it make you feel? Did it put you in a negative mood? Did it really make you feel comfortable with the seller? Did it make you want to place a bid on the item?

Truth be told, how many non-paying bidders (NPB) do you think read the comment and said to themselves, “I better not bid on this item?” I’m sure it’s close to none. If the NPB wants to place a bid they are going to place a bid. Regardless what you write in your listings. It’s not going to stop a NPB but it has the potential of stopping a real bidder. Remember how you felt?

So the first principle of writing amazing Terms & Conditions is to make sure you send off a positive message. Forget about what you want out of the sale and think like a buyer. You need to make the buyers feel secure about buying from you. Use this space to send a positive message about what you’re like as a seller.

Tips For Creating Terrific Terms

  1. Get to the point:
    Don’t try to be round about in your writing. If you really don’t need to say something about your item or services, don’t! Just give the facts.
  2. Fill in all the eBay fields:
    Make sure you enter the correct information in all the eBay fields. This can include your standard shipping cost and time. refund policy, and taxes that are charged, types of payments you accept, etc.
  3. Be very specific about your shipping cost:
    If you have a flat rate for shipping, make sure you give the total amount. Do not give them the amount for shipping plus an additional fee. Give them the total amount, which includes any additional fees. But do explain there is an additional fee included in the amount.
  4. Be very specific about your shipping time:
    Let your buyers know when you ship out items. Can buyers safely assume you’ll ship their item the day they pay, or might it take a few more days? Doing this will set up their expectations and head off problems before they happen.
  5. Be very clear with your return policy:
    Make your return policy very clear and visible. If you currently don’t have a return policy, you should start to create one now. Return policies make buyers feel that their is no risk for them. You are giving them the option to return the item if they are not satisfied. So you are removing their fear of being riped off.
    You should also give in details what the buyer needs to do to get their refund. Such as giving them the allowed time, currently eBay rules say you must allow buyers to return goods within 14 days of purchase. Also tell them how and when they will receive their refund.
  6. Show off your combined shipping:
    You want to make your buyers feel they will get a better deal if they buy more than one item. Offering a shipping discount when they purchase additional items or on purchases above a certain level is always a good way to encourage more sales while giving buyers the idea they’ve got a bargain.

I’ve been using these tips on all my auction listings and I must say I’ve had many happy customers. I rarely have to refund anyones money and get very few complaints. Start implementing this tips and I’m sure you will see an increase in your sales and a decrease in customer complaints.
