If you have been selling on the internet for some time you must be familiar with Pay-Per-Click ads. You know the ads you see in the right hand column of Google, Yahoo and MSN search engines. If you didn’t know, people actually pay the search engines to place their ads in that area. The way they pay is based on a per click payment. Meaning they, the search engine, only gets paid if someone clicks on the link within the ad.

eBay recently announced the launch of their pay-per-click keyword ad program, ‘eBay AdCommerce‘. The new program is going to be beta tested by a few selected sellers on eBay.com and eBay.de, but should be available to all sellers in the US and Germany by the end of the year. It doesn’t seem they are planning to included any of their other country site.

eBay AdCommerce will work as google adwords. Basically you will be able to bid on selected keywords and if your are the highest bidder your ad will be displayed at the bottom of search results, when a buyer searches for that keyword. There is a catch to this. Unlike google, where you can have your links point to any website you want, links from your eBay ad can only go to an eBay page - your eBay shop, listings, about me page, and any page on eBay.

Your ad will consist of a title, a short description, and if you want an image. If you have used Google Adwords this will seem very similar. If not, you will set a budget and what you are willing to pay per click. Remember you will only be charged when someone clicks on your link.

This is not the first time eBay is doing this. They had a similar program several years ago. I guess since people are use to this now, they figure let’s try it again. The big difference with the first attempt was the placement of the ads. In the past the ads would appear on the top of the page. The same place they currently place other paid ads. Now your ads will appear all the way below the search results. The same area you currently see other ads.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to pay extra money to be placed at the bottom of the page. If the ads were placed on the top, as the first version, I would use this. I use to be a huge user of the past version and did see a big increase in bids, higher sale prices and visits to my stores.
